Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver

You will spend the first few days in the classroom and pool, preparing for your four open water dives which are divided over two days. You will dive at sites around Padang Bai or Tulamben on the east coast of Bali, where conditions are ideal for training dives. Our PADI instructors will be with you every step of the way, showing you the wonders of the underwater world of Bali.

By the end of the course, you will be a certified PADI Open Water Diver. You will be licensed to dive with a buddy at depths of up to eighteen metres.

You must be at least ten years old to enrol in the PADI Open Water Diver course (or Junior Open Water Diver course). No prior experience with scuba diving is required.

The Advanced Open Water course involves five adventure dives, typically completed over two days. You will explore different kinds of adventure. The Advanced Open Water Course will increase your confidence and build up your scuba skills to become a more confident diver.

What Will You Learn?

1. Knowledge Development
This phase of the Open Water Diver Course covers the theoretical aspects of scuba diving. You’ll learn about the fundamental principles of diving physics/physiology, equipment, and safety procedures. The knowledge development can be completed through various methods:

a. Online Learning: A convenient studying method that allows you to study at your own pace even before you arrive in Bali. Online learning is a good option if you only have a shorter holiday as it replaces the one-day classroom session. Our Dive Centre offers online e-learning modules.

b. Classroom Sessions (optional): In case you need an extra theory lesson, then these sessions are designed to provide you with an even more comprehensive understanding of the course based on the e-learning modules, including diving concepts, equipment, and safety procedures. During the classroom sessions, an experienced instructor will guide you through the materials and answer any questions you may still need to finish.

2. Confined Water Training:
Once you’ve gained a foundational understanding of diving concepts, you’ll move on to confined water training. This phase takes place in a controlled environment, usually a swimming pool. Here, you’ll practice essential skills such as:

  • Assemble and disassemble scuba equipment.
  • Proper use of diving gear, including mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control.
  • Underwater communication and hand signals.
  • Emergency procedures like sharing air with a buddy, emergency weight drop, or even how to bring yourself to the surface on your own in an emergency situation (Controlled emergency swimming ascent).
The confined water training ensures that you are comfortable and confident with the basic skills before progressing to open water.

3. Open Water Dives:
The final phase of the course involves applying the skills you’ve learned in real open water environments. Typically, this consists of a series of four open water dives. These dives are all under the direct supervision of a certified PADI instructor. During these dives, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate the skills you learned in confined water.
  • Explore underwater environments and marine life.
  • Experience the thrill of open water diving while practicing safety procedures.

After this, you can complete the PADI Advanced Open Water course in just two days. You will complete five dives and knowledge reviews to pass. You will complete two dives: the Deep Dive and the Underwater Navigation. You will also complete three additional dives of your choice. You can choose from more than sixteen different adventure dives. Your PADI Adventure Diving manual and instructor will guide you in improving your diving skills and prepare you for new experiences and adventures.

During the Deep Adventure Dive, you will learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive will refine your compass navigation skills and help you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.

To complete the PADI Adventure Diver course, you must complete three training dives. You can choose these three dives from:

  • Digital underwater imaging adventure
  • Deep dive (mandatory)
  • Wreck dive
  • Underwater Naturalist
  • Search and recovery dive
