PADI Open Water Diver Course

The Gateway to Underwater World Exploration.

Open Water Diver Course Overview

The Open Water Course is an entry-level scuba diving certification course designed for individuals who want to learn how to scuba dive and explore the underwater world. The course consists of a combination of Knowledge Development sessions, Confined Water Training, and Open Dater dives.

During the Open Water Course, you learn essential scuba diving skills, including equipment use, buoyancy control, underwater navigation, and safety procedures. They also acquire a solid understanding of dive theory, which covers topics like dive planning, decompression theory, and the effects of pressure on the body.

Upon successfully completing the course, you receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification. It allows you to dive independently (with a buddy) to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet) in various dive sites worldwide. This certification is a key for those who wish to explore the Earth’s incredible underwater ecosystems and marine life.

The Open Water Diver Course Phases

1. Knowledge Development
This phase of the course covers the theoretical aspects of scuba diving. You’ll learn about the fundamental principles of diving physics/physiology, equipment, and safety procedures. The knowledge development can be completed through various methods:

a. Online Learning: A convenient studying method that allows you to study at your own pace even before you arrive in Bali. Online learning is a good option if you only have a shorter holiday as it replaces the one-day classroom session. Our Dive Centre offers online e-learning modules.

b. Classroom Sessions (optional): In case you need an extra theory lesson, then these sessions are designed to provide you with an even more comprehensive understanding of the course based on the e-learning modules, including diving concepts, equipment, and safety procedures. During the classroom sessions, an experienced instructor will guide you through the materials and answer any questions you may still need to finish.

2. Confined Water Training:
Once you’ve gained a foundational understanding of diving concepts, you’ll move on to confined water training. This phase takes place in a controlled environment, usually a swimming pool. Here, you’ll practice essential skills such as:

  • Assemble and disassemble scuba equipment.
  • Proper use of diving gear, including mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control.
  • Underwater communication and hand signals.
  • Emergency procedures like sharing air with a buddy, emergency weight drop, or even how to bring yourself to the surface on your own in an emergency situation (Controlled emergency swimming ascent).

The confined water training ensures that you are comfortable and confident with the basic skills before entering open water.

3. Open Water Dives:
The final phase of the course involves applying the skills you’ve learned in real open water environments. Typically, this consists of a series of four open water dives. These dives are all under the direct supervision of a certified PADI instructor. During these dives, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate the skills you learned in confined water.
  • Explore underwater environments and marine life.
  • Experience the thrill of open water diving while practicing safety procedures.
